Behind the Music

I wasn't always musical, but my family was. I heard that my dad played the trumpet, never heard proof, but he does sing in the choir to this day! My mom is the best pianist and organist you'll ever hear, and both of my grandparents sang and played instruments. Pretty normal right? I started taking piano lessons like every other first grader and ended up with the usual attitude of " I don't want to practice," and quit. Ironically, I kept playing piano every day but by ear. I specifically remember growing up hearing the piano every night as one of my four sisters or mom practiced, noticing every chord. The notes rang through the yellow and red spotted paper covered walls, always captivating me. It sounded best at the top of the staircase. I especially liked the piano when it was loud enough to hide our nightly sister quarrels about borrowing that shirt, Barbie, or who got the last Little Debbie...if the music stopped and we were still fighting then someone got a wooden spoon to the but!
I never thought that I would contribute anything other than my ears to music but all of a sudden my youth leader Sharon asked me to sing with the new "contemporary worship team" at church. I agreed and tried to figure out how to hide my awkward twelve-year-oldness. I loved singing into that microphone! Everything changed one night; home alone and playing my usual Clair De Lune, Hymns, Disney songs, etc. (NEVER Heart and Soul or that annoying song you play on the black notes with your knuckles) I was probably depressed about that eighth grade boy that dumped me or the pimples on my chin. Therefore, I opened God's word to the Psalms and wrote a song on the piano in about fifteen minutes. I was so excited, shocked, and ready to share. Naturally, I played it at school in the choir room. People started gathering around, convinced me to enter the talent show, and I won first place! Now, at Bearden this was a big deal since our school was known for the arts! I began to sing the song I wrote at weddings, wrote more, sang more, etc. Who knew that I would still have the chance to share music... and with an amazing partner! I even got to record at RCA studio B, and Curb Records (thanks to Kevin Smith) for my first real record (third recording)! I still have some available for a donation if you want a copy! And here I am, a graduate of MTSU and the music program! What a blessing! Thanks for sharing this gift of music with us.
It's almost overwhelming to think about with were God has taken me. It's awesome what He can do...
